Belmont Hill
Private Residence
Belmont, Massachusetts
This fantastic woodland site features a muscular canopy of shagbark hickory, paper birch, oak, pine, and hemlock. An early 20th-century house sits atop a high point of dramatic south-facing topography with gorgeous views of adjacent conservation land, remnant fieldstone walls, and native stone outcroppings. New Massachusetts Goshen stone walls form terraces traversing native topography. A meticulously crafted stone staircase provides casual passage from a richly patterned brick patio and herb garden to a lawn terrace, bocce court, and a gently sloping lawn knoll carved from the existing hillside. Lush perennial borders and native plant stands create edges and thresholds with surrounding topography and site geology, and a crisp palette of traditional and contemporary materials merge. The true character of the woodland is revealed.
