Matthew Cunningham

Matthew Cunningham is an award-winning landscape designer who derives passion from the landscapes of New England and from his rural roots in the verdant, rocky coast of Maine. His inspiration has led him to study, design, and create memorable places throughout the Northeast. Matthew's work combines a deep appreciation for local history with decades of plant expertise. He communicates personally with clients, architects, and contractors, and guides every project with a clear understanding of the realities of construction, maintenance, and budget.

Prior to starting his practice in 2004, he was with the renowned firm Reed Hilderbrand Associates where he contributed to dozens of institutional and residential design projects, including the Arnold Arboretum Shrub and Vine Garden in Jamaica Plain, MA, the Rosserne, in Northeast Harbor, ME, and the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA. Matthew holds degrees in landscape architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (MLA II) and from the College of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (BSLA). His distinguished academic record includes Certificates of Honor from the American Society of Landscape Architects at both institutions.

In his work, Matthew places emphasis on the artistic detail and craft of every built landscape, leading to expressive, authentic, and ecologically considerate schemes that adapt and evolve over time. He strives to build a unique sense of place into every project by incorporating existing site features and strengthening the connections between interior and exterior spaces. The results are lush, thoughtful, contemporary landscapes for people’s homes, built from a collaborative process with his clients.
